In November 1996, after months of experiencing symptoms, my mother
was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had seen her mother die of
cancer, as well as my father's mother. Since then, her sister has
undergone treatment for breast cancer. Both are still alive.
Cancer may be a family legacy, but in YES! I acknowledge my mother's strength. I see her as living, rather than dying. She is living her life on her terms, leaving a legacy of strength and celebration of life -- to make something of life's barbed tangle, to celebrate our bodies and our selves. | |
