In 1994, during a routine gynecological exam, an ovary was found to be enlarged. Both ovaries were confirmed as cancerous during the ensuing surgery. While recuperating from the surgery, I began making small hand-sewn books. These books enabled me to fill my time productively and with an eye to the future and a positive attitude.

The use of children's images started while receiving chemotherapy and was prompted by the special relationship I developed with my daughter during that difficult time. I continued with myartwork when my energy allowed, making paper and incorporating photographic images, paper patterns and metal objects, which I allowed to rust and stain the paper.

In Spoons, of the children in the image (myself, a cousin and two friends), I am the only survivor. The others were lost to cancer, a heart attack and an automobileaccident.
