Foods With Tyramine and Carcinoid

Last Modified: September 23, 2011

Question

Dear OncoLink "Ask The Experts,"

Why are foods with tyramine not good for carcinoid patients? What are examples of foods containing tyramine?

Answer

Karen Wagner MS, RD, LDN, Clinical dietitian specialist for the Abramson Cancer Center, responds:

Foods with tyramine can cause carcinoid symptoms for some patients. Foods containing tyramine are typically aged or fermented products, such as aged or smoked cheeses and meats, miso or tempeh products. Some fruits, vegetables and nuts also contain some tyramine, such as broad beans, Brazil nuts and raspberries. Carcinoid.org has some additional information about foods that contain tyramine.
