Dragonfly oil on linen 36 x 40 inches 1995
We live in a society so compartmentalized that the thought of our own mortality is often relegated to a few hours reflection within the confines of a church or when confronted with the unexpected death of a loved one. I see my work as an invitation to speak of and acknowledge the relationship between the earthly and spiritual powers ever present in our existence on this planet. This painting uses the dragonfly as an image of transcendence and transformation, of leaving one stage of development to enter another.
In February of 1991, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This was the beginning of an incredible journey, one charted by the intuitive powers of my art. My paintings became the bridge between this existence here on earth and whatever dimension lies beyond. Through many months of treatments and hard work, I was able to undergo an operation that saved my life.
Having walked the tightrope between this world and the next and teetered on the brink of departure, I am only too aware of how thin is the veil that separates them.
