Questions to Ask During Your Radiation Oncology Consultation

A radiation oncologist is a doctor who treats cancer, benign tumors, and other conditions with radiation therapy. Below is a list of questions that are usually discussed between you and your provider. Use this list to take notes and ask any other questions you might have. It can be helpful to bring someone to your appointments or have them call in to help take notes.

Before Treatment

  • Will I have treatment every day?
  • How long will each treatment take?
  • How many days or weeks will I need treatment?
  • Can I take a vacation right after treatment?
  • What side effects should I expect during treatment?
  • What long-term side effects might I have?
  • Are there any foods I should avoid during treatment?
  • Will I be able to keep up with my normal daily activities?
  • Who will give me my radiation treatment each day?
  • How often will I see you during my treatment?
  • What happens if the machine breaks or I am sick and miss a treatment?
  • What time will my treatment be each day?
  • Can I work during my treatment?
  • Will I be able to drive myself to treatment?

After Treatment

  • What happens if my treatment doesn’t work?
  • How do we know if the treatment worked?
  • When will my treatment side effects go away?
  • How often will I see you after treatment?
  • Will I need scans or lab tests after treatment?
  • Will I receive a survivorship care plan after treatment?
