The American Cancer Society has sponsored the development of this excellent reference titled Women and Cancer. It is a complete, up-to-date guide for cancers of the breast, cervix, uterus, and ovaries. Experts in each of these cancers have come together to provide women with a valuable resource.
The book is divided into 4 major sections that address breast cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer, respectively. Each section of the book describes the normal anatomy and physiology of the organ. There is then a description of screening and diagnostic tests for each site. A discussion of the appropriate treatments including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery are included. Recommendations for treatment are made based on stage of disease at each site. The side effects of each therapy are also discussed. Information about hormonal treatments is included when appropriate. There is also a resource section included at the end of the book.
The book provides a general overview of the cancers of the female reproductive organs that will broaden the knowledge of the patient. It will help the reader generate important discussions with their health care provider. The book is well written and defines confusing medical jargon. It will serve as a good reference for anyone interested in cancers of the female reproductive organs.
