What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is an increase in breast tissue in males, causing enlargement of the breasts. Some chemotherapy medications and hormone therapies can cause gynecomastia. There may also be pain in the breasts. The breasts may be tender, swollen, or the nipples may be more sensitive. Gynecomastia will often go away when your treatment is stopped.

How is gynecomastia treated?

Gynecomastia is not often treated. If there is a medical condition causing gynecomastia, the condition may be treated. If a medication you are taking is causing gynecomastia, your provider may talk with you about stopping the medication.

When should I call my care team?

Gynecomastia can be upsetting and can cause body image concerns. If you have breast enlargement or tenderness that is upsetting to you, speak to your care provider.
